**Links in webpages and posts are important, not only for your website visitors to bring them to other relevant and related content on our sites but also for SEO purposes.**

SEO means Search Engine Optimization and this includes all activities that make sure your articles will appear as high as possible in the Search Engines Search Result (SERP) pages. So when people perform a search in Google or Bing, we want our content to be on top or at least on the first page. Adding relevant and trustfull links in your posts/pages is good for visitors, so also for Google and Bing.

The higher our content will appear in SERPs, the more chance we have that they click to our websites.

## **Types of links**

There are several types of links that you can add to your posts and pages. There are internal links, external links and incoming links:

1. **internal links** to content on the same website you work on
2. **outgoing links** to external websites, links to 3rd party sites but also to other KCI websites
3. **incoming links** from other sites to posts and pages on your own site

### **1. internal links to content on the same website you work on**

This is basically a simple proces. When you publish an article you add link(s) to other content on the same site.

An example. Let's say you pubish an article on GreenSteelWorld.com where the 'World Steel Association' is mentioned. You can then add a link in the article text on the words 'World Steel Association' and link this to another page or post on GreenSteelWorld.com. In this case people can click on 'World Steel Association' and they will go to the other post that has the words 'World Steel Association' in it. They have more information and they stay longer on our site.

### **2. outgoing links to external websites, links to 3rd party sites but also to other KCI websites**

This is also a very basic and simple process. Instead of linking to a post or page on the same website you create a link to an other site, an 'external' site. This can be a website in the KCI network but also outside KCI.

An example. Let's say you pubish an article on GreenSteelWorld.com where the 'World Steel Association' is mentioned. You can then add a link in the article text on the words 'World Steel Association' and link this to another page or post on, for example Stainless-Steel-World.net where the 'World Steel Organisation' is also mentioned. In this case people can click on 'World Steel Association' and they will be routed to the post on Stainless-Steel-World.net that has the words 'World Steel Association' in it. In this way they access more relevant information, they stay longer on our sites and they may not have heard about Stainless-Steel-World.net before and discover our site it in this way.

Alternatively, you can provide the visitor with more relevant information on other, non KCI sites. Think of linking to a great page on a newssite or a page on Wikipedia, to a KCI Linkedin group or to a KCI social media account. It's also possible to link to our sites that have authority on the subject you  write and publish. At the end Google and Bing rewards us if we bring good and relevant content together around a specific subject.

### **3. incoming links from other sites to posts and pages on your own site (see seperate article on linkbuilding)**

This is the most difficult and time consuming option to get links. In this case you want other 3rd parties to add a link on their site to your KCI website. The process to get links from 3rd party sites is called **linkbuilding**.

The best way to achieve this is publish unique and great content on our own sites and share it through social media or newsletters. In this way editors of the 3rd party site are creating links to our content because its valuable for them and for their visitors.

More and more we see so called outreacht teams that contact us for link requests. Always make sure that if you want to add a link in your content to an external that the site you link too, has authority and that it is a site we can trust. If you link to sites with no value, to a site with spammy articles or a site that only consists of AI generated content, this will harm us in Google and Bing.

There's also another way to get external links to your site. You can just ask webmasters of 3rd parties to link to a specific article on the KCI website. This is called **outreach**. The way to do this is to simply ask a website webmaster to add a link to our content in their articles.

This is a time consuming task and many times you will not receive an answer. It would help if you know the publishers/website managers of other companies so you have direct access to them. Think about companies that advertise on KCI.

Lastly, linking from one KCI site to another KCI is also a good idea and easy to do.

## **Some tips and guidelines**

1. The**number of links** you may want to add to your page or posts depends on the length of the text on the page/post. If you have a small press release, it might be sufficient to add 2 links, one to an internal page/post on your own site and one to an external post/page. On the other hand, if you have a long read like a Featured Article, you can add 5 to perhaps even 7 links in your text. This provides the reader with many options to gather and read more information. You can combine links to an article on your own site, link to Linkedin (user or group), link to Wikipedia or a general newssite, see bullet 6 below. Not only our visitors will like this, Google and Bing like it but for us it is better to keep people longer on our sites by offering them related interesting information.
2. **Spread the links** over the text in the article, not all links in the first paragraph, not all links at the bottom.
3. If you have an article that has relevance to articles on other **KCI websites**, contact the publisher or admin of that site to create a link to your post and vise versa.
4. Link to a **company's website** that is mentioned in your article.
5. If you write and publish an article for a specific company, ask the company to link to your post on the KCI site (**outreach**)
6. You can always **link to trusted 3rd party sites**. Always check if the site you want to link too can be trusted. If you link to unknown websites, this may cause harm to our own sites' appearance in Google.
Good and trusted sites to link to are for example the following sites: wikipedia.org (for general information, company information, people information, historical data), Linkedin (people and company information) and other social media sites like Twitter and Instagram, g2.com (software related reviews) and crunchbase (company information).

### **Link examples**

Link to text Green Hydrogen > [**https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_hydrogen**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_hydrogen)

Link to Advance Steel > [**https://www.g2.com/products/advance-steel/reviews**](https://www.g2.com/products/advance-steel/reviews)

Link to Outokumpu > **[https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/outokumpu-group](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/outokumpu-group)**

Link to Valve World > [**https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/valve-world/**](https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/valve-world/)

Link to AIGI Environmental Inc. > [**https://twitter.com/IncAigi**](https://twitter.com/IncAigi)

## **Opening of links**

If you add a link in your artcile you have the option to select the way a link must be opened.

A good guidance is that, if you **link to internal post** of pages on your own site, to use the option 'Link in same window'. In this way when the visitor clicks the link, the visitor will stay on our site.

If you **link to an external site** it is a good habit to open this link in a new window. In this case, when the visitor clicks the link, the target site will open in new window. This also means that our site stays opened in the background and the visitor can easily continue on our own website when he/she closes the external window.

## **Links on images**

In the same way as you add links on texts, you can add links on images thay you may add in your post or page.

## **Tags**

Tags are special types of links. You can add tags when you publish a new post. By doing so this you give the visitor related keywords about the content of your post.

Tags automatically appear below the article and are clickable. This means that, once a visitor clicks on a tag, the visitor will see a complete list with all posts that are 'tagged' with this specific keyword. It provides the visitor more relevant content and the visitor might stay longer on the site. It also gives Google more information on the way about how our sites are structured.

### **Tips on Tags**

1. Avoid non-relevant tags. Adding a tag like 'valve' is not really usefull on a site like Valve World as almost every article on Valve-World.net is about valves. But, it can be usefull on GreenSteelWorld.com.
2. Avoid confusing tags or nearly similar tags. A tag like 'Valve Stem Leaks' is a great tag. But do not create another tag like 'Valve Stem Leak'. In this way you have two tags pointing to similar content.
