Posts are used in different ways. Every news article on a website is a post and also a Featured Story is a post. Posts must attract users to our website and are basically the most important part of any website. Posts are about the content.
Posts versus pages #
Posts are mainly used for news and blog items, where pages contain more static content. Examples of pages are the Contact Us page, the Privacy Policy page or the Cookie Policy page. Post are the news articles you publish and the Featured Stories you create.
There are several apects to think of of when you create a post;
- Make sure to put in an attractive title and try to keep it to a maximum of 7 to 11 words. The titile will appear ‘everywhere’. Not only on our own website but also in our Social Media channels (Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook), our newsletters but also in the Google search results.
- Make the first paragraph of a post bold. The first paragraph gives in most cases a brief overview of the newsarticle and by making it bold it stands out from the rest. In many cases we do not have images in our posts so this makes the page a little bit more attractive and easier to read.
- Create an excerpt. The excerpt is a brief summary and appears on different places; in the categories on our website, in the newsletter below / next the articles and Google may use the excerpt for the description in the search results. Use a short excerpt like one or two lines. If you don’t use a short excerpt in a post the text will be cut of like this […]
This looks highly unprofessional, especially in our newsletters. Do not forget the excerpt. If there is no time to write an excerpt, use the first line of the newsarticle. - Add the newsarticle to the correct content category and the general news category to make sure it appears in the correct sections on the homepage (first at the top but also in seperate post sections further down n the homepage)
- Add tags to post. Tags describe the content of the article, you can use 7 to 10 tags depending of the length of the article.
- Use a good (sized) photo. Also photos will appear on many different places. Not only on our own website but in our Social Media channels (Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook) and newsletters but also in the Google search results. Make sure your pcture or photo is not too large, not in filesize but also in height and width. Use a tool like tinypng.com to compress your image without losing quality.
- Add SEO information to the post. There’s a seperate section in Editting mode to set the Meta Description and the title. Add at least a meta description of the correct length, the indicator below the mesta decription box is red (not good, too long or too short) or green (length is good).
- Create links to other posts and pages. Make the links bold so that they stand out, are better visible and more tempting to click on.
